2K Games announced the release date of the free patch adding 3D support to NBA 2K11. It’s coming out on January 16th, and besides adding stereoscopic depth to the experience, it will also fix some online issues.
A 3D version of NBA 2K11 was already released when game launched last November as a retail exclusive at Best Buy. Copies sold elsewhere were 3D-less. This update will basically bring 3D to the latter.
Interestingly, developer Visual Concepts claims that the 3D technology allows them “to make a 3D game using full resolution HDTV images at framerates up to 120Hz”, which is an odd claim since no current 3D HDTV can go beyond 1080p/30fps (or 60Hz). Probably it’s just a generic description of what 3D allows in theory rather than of what they achieved with NBA 2K11 specifically.
Anyway, if you have a 3D TV and NBA 2K11, feel free to post your findings/impressions in the comments section below once the update goes live (or if you have the “Best Buy” version).
